Description

Jacob Steinhardt (1887-1968) was born in 1887 in Zerkow, Germany.
He studied at the School of Art in Berlin in 1906, and a year later he studied painting with Louis Corinth and engraving with Herman Struck. He continued his studies in Paris in 1908-10 together with Matisse and Steinlen. In 1914 he exhibited with Meidner at the first Expressionist Exhibition in Berlin. Steinhardt immigrated to Israel in 1933 and became a teacher and director of the Bezalel School of Art. He is mostly known for his narrative woodcuts depicting biblical and other Jewish subjects. He won several international prizes for his woodcuts, and had many exhibition across the world. Steinhardt died in 1968.
