Description

Donald Roberts, born in 1923 in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, graduated from Brewster Academy. He went on to study at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston, Massachusetts, was awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design, as well as his Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in 1953. He crafted a career for himself as a nationally recognized lithographer, painter, and sculptor as well as a teacher during his lengthy career as a professor of art at the Ohio University School of Art in Athens, Ohio. Roberts actively taught at Ohio University from 1953 to 1991 while maintaining a strong presence in the local art community. Roberts, along with his colleague, the former Dean of Fine Arts, Henry Lin, are credited with advancing the development of the University’s School of Art + Design. Roberts held a philosophy that the viewing of original art, as opposed to reproductions, was essential for learning. He died in 2015.

June Carver Roberts grew up in New England, where she spent her time drawing and painting outdoor scenery. June wed Donald Roberts in 1949. Carver later moved to Athens, Ohio in 1953 where she earned a B.F.A. from Ohio University. June was a recipient of many awards in the art community, including the John Marin Award, for some of her drawings and watercolors. Many of her works are in private collections, while some of her watercolors are in the permanent collections of the Butler Art Institute, the Akron Art Institute, and the Huntington Galleries. June Carver Roberts died in 2002.
